Handmade Gift Exchange Craft!

Hello once again!
Today I'm posting the gift I made for the Handmade Gift Exchange.  Linda has a fabulous site and holds the Handmade Gift Exchange twice a year.

This was my first time participating in the gift exchange and it was soo much fun to be paired up with another crafty lady, exchange a few emails and a handmade gift.  My gift partner and I kept our gifts to each other a surprise, we thought it'd be a bit more fun that way :)  The surprise was on us though as we each ended up making each other purses! Below is the handbag that I made, I will update this post later with pictures of the fabulous handbag that I received!

My sister had gotten me this Simplicity pattern for my birthday in June and I thought I'd try out one of the patterns.  I used some decor weight fabric remnants that I had picked up at the local DAC thrift store in our town along with the mint and cream accent fabric remnant from, I believe, our local JoAnn's remnant pile.

I really like how it turned out!  The only things I would do differently would be to lengthen the straps so that it can be worn over the shoulder more easily.

I added the fabric flower and made it a pin so that it can be removed if the bag needs to be washed.

The flower was made by applying fusible interfacing to some cream heavier weight fabric then cutting out various sized circles and arranging them on top of one another.  I also cut out 2 leaf shaped pieces of fabric and put them on the bottom.  I then sewed through all of the pieces.  At this point I got lazy and I hot-glued a button and some beads for the flower center and a pin to the back.  To make this more durable it would've been better to sew the beads on and the pin on the back.
Had I thought about it I should've taken photos along the way so I could've created my first tutorial :( Oh well.  Look for tutorials in the future though as I am currently looking forward to adding that aspect of my blog!

  1. Very cute purse Lisa! Would you ever consider donating one of your pieces to a fundraising event I am involved in called "Power of the Purse?" It is a purse auction event where all of the proceeds go to my program, Imagination Library. Through this program a child gets a free book mailed to them once a month from birth to five years old. We have about 4000 children in our service area enrolled! If you are interested I can contact you again in the fall or winter. Thanks!
